why we love Japan part 11
"Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to SAN-NEN ZAKA.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about.
SAN-NEN ZAKA forever."
San-Nen Zaka, (3 years Walk) in Kyoto, Japan,
we take you on our tour down the old rickety preserved pathway
from Kiyomizu Temple
serene, green and very very clean!
So, after caffinating ourselves up to the max (from a large soup bowl) we were ready!
And giddy!

The pathway is preserved by the Government so all the architecture is untouched,
it is so quiet that you can practically hear the incontinence bags filling
(San-nen zaka is mainly old people)
Each side of the walk down is littered (see what we did there?!)
with stalls selling wierd and wonderful things
Like a gay parade, but much prettier
OH MY GOURD!
After stopping for bites to munch on - Kuro Mochi and Beef balls (oishii)
and combing our hair
and looking at overpriced cool stuff
and seeing cool old men
We reached the bottom. It didnt take 3 years, but boy were we tired.
We saw, from a distance, what appeared to be our first sightings of GEISHA!
However, as we got closer and saw tourists lining up to have their photos taken,
We noticed that these were very shoddy Geisha. Very shoddy indeed.
Look at that wig! its not even a colour match!
Pantone much????
As we continued on, further down towards the end we noticed a "Geisha School"
for tourists, to pay to be made up (badly) and to then go off into the wild, to fool tourists.
Baka no Gaijin!!
After all this visual banquet, we decided we needed a real banquet.
A liquid banquet.
We stopped in the "Royal Oriental Gardens", for champers and cassis sorbet / tiramisu.
A REAL winter warmer!
And so concludes our walk.
We hope you liked it. If you are ever in Kyoto, go there, it is beautiful!

You may have seen the main crossing in Shibuya, Japan, on films, telly, or even in pictures.
Have you ever tried to cross it?
Its a bit like being in the middle of a motorway, but without cars.
Thankfully though, it is in Japan, so there is no worry for crashing,
or being pickpocketed as you plow through the human meat pile
it begins - just keep your line of vision and keep repeating
"its only a crossing... its only a crossing..."
whoosh whoosh!
zoom! zoom! help!
We are sure it was designed to traumatise you, so that when you
finally get to the other side, you are so delirious and exhausted
all you can see in front of you are shops!

PACHINKO!
Bless You. No, not a sneeze, but a traditional game in Japan.
Shiny, glowy and noisy, these weird devices are a national pastime.
1- Money goes in
2 - Balls come out
3- you turn dial
4- machine makes noise
5-beep beep beep
6- flash flash flash
7-fin
All over in 20 secs. Like a sophomore female, we failed to see the appeal, despite half of us having grown up around them.
(Pachinko, not sophomore females)
As well as the machine being an epileptic dream,
its not just one, or three clanking, binging and honking
but MILLIONS! in rows! they will take over the planet!
After spending your hard earned yen, you may win a prize.
Some cigarettes, a nudey otaku figurine, a cap, who knows!?
We won a 500 Yen piece which we kept for our Pokemon Seizure memories.

Every japanese person loves TOTORO, and so do we. Here are some snippets of marketing ploys we have succumbed to over the years, full STUDIO GHIBLI museum report coming soon!
this multicoloured marvel below is our favourite magazine, SO-EN Magazine, from Japan. Not just fashion based, there are sections to food, clothing in cinema, product etc. Each issue is focused on a certain theme, usually anglicised to something like "the POWER of shoes and bag". Not only because we've been in it, but because it is fab.
